Preserve

One of the main goals of this resource is to preserve the historical experience of Venice, an immaterial yet vital part of the city's cultural heritage that is disappearing before our eyes. Although contemporary Venetians strive to keep their urban history alive through historical reenactments of pre-modern civic ceremonies among other activities, acqua alta (high water), over-tourism, gentrification, and pollution are forcing residents to flee to the mainland. As a result, the city is fading into a commercial shell of its former self, a soulless "Disneyland of the Sea" devoid of any living connection to its past. Virtual Venice combats this trend by reconstructing Historical Itineraries for educational use; recording and documenting contemporary ceremonial reenactments, which are used for the footage of selected Historical Itineraries; providing a time-lapse map illustrating changes made to the Venetian urban fabric during the modern period (coming soon); and encouraging users to patronize the organizations listed below, which promote sustainable tourism in the lagoon.
