About

Virtual Venice is an educational platform that transports audiences to the historical world of the Venetian lagoon. Under Historical Itineraries, users will find VR-enabled, 360-video tours of the canals and streets of Venice, each of which chronicles the history of the city from the perspective of a featured traveler who either lived on or visited the island between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. Combining several immersive media technologies, the videos reconstruct the travelers' documented journeys and use their experiences as gateways to broader investigations of Venetian culture. Overlaid onto the environment of the videos, interactive hotspots provide a narrative storyline that weaves together the first-person observations of the travelers and/or eye-witnesses to the journey, historical images, and critical commentary on a wide variety of themes. Especially when viewed in VR, the videos place users in the physical setting of Venice, strengthening the affective connection with the past. Whether floating down the Grand Canal or walking along a narrow calle (street), users enjoy the embodied experience of the lagoon's kinetic environmental conditions, such as glittering reflections of light and color, while empathizing with the travelers' descriptions of what they saw, felt, and heard. Through these shared experiences, users learn the history of Venice through the eyes of the people who lived it.
